Ben Hawkins, (canon: Carnivale), is a relatively tall 19 year old with messy dark-brown hair and a chin of continuously growing stubble. His appearance is unkempt and uncharacteristically filthy compared to most denizens of any establishment. He wears a thin, long-sleeved shirt with the sleeve's buttons all un-done and with all three buttons at the neck of the shirt also undone, giving the casual viewer a pretty good look at his sparse amount of chest hair below his collarbone. He wears denim overalls, the straps for which he often has undone, and plain working boots that have been thoroughly worn in by now. He's often seen wearing a filthy formerly-white jacket as well has his shirt. He is slightly skinny, but physically strong enough to perform manual labour tasks around the Carnival.

His facial expressions or lack-thereof suggest complex introversion and his stormy look is his default when not occupied. He frowns often, whether confused or angered, and in general his seeming lack of effort as far as socialising is concerned may make others think him to be unfriendly or unkind. He has great difficulty understanding and socialising, often finding people don't make much sense or that their heckling is unneeded. He is often prone to speak bluntly and say the wrong thing, something he doesn't mean to happen but which happens anyway. His personality might be categorized as 'dangerous', because to the detriment of himself and those around him he bottles up negative emotions and when forced into corners (so to speak) he lashes out verbally or physically. This side of him is generally unseen and he does a great job of keeping it that way. He holds a great many secrets and has rarely told any. He often experiences negative, self-hating thoughts but manages to hide it enough to keep working practically and effectively.

Although he is legally considered a man, most adults view him as a child, perhaps because most adults he are exposed to are often many years his senior. He considers himself a man, though he for some reason has an easier time connecting to younger people than he does older.

When stressed or upset, he resorts to smoking. It's medicinal, as far as the 1930s are concerned. He often simply smokes a few times a day anyway, but nothing calms the nerves like nicotine. He has killed (murdered) four individuals, the first killing getting him put into a chain-gang, the second was orchestrated by outside forces, the third was also orchestrated by outside forces but was still a product of murderous rage and the fourth was in cold blood. Three of these murders he was fated to perform, the final to save humanity and their souls. Ben Hawkins is an Avatar of Light, a physical embodiment of some greater holy being, which gives Ben a plethora of magical gifts. Despite the rudimentary 'holy' nature of these powers, they are just as often used for evil as they are good. Not all Avatars of Light are necessarily good either- some are unimaginably cruel and utilitarian in their sacrifices for the greater good.

Despite these negative traits, Ben Hawkins is not a 'bad person', rather a deeply troubled youth entangled by fate into an archaic war that shows no mercy to its soldiers or civilians. He generally cares for people and at times will help those who need it at the drop of a hat.
